action packed

Last week, I did…

(No proof reading done, so its probably not a good story)

Not did, attended. An Indian Feast. I am a person that is hard to say no when knowing a feast is around the corner. A few of us travelled to Oendrila’s place. Time to catch up and then headed to her local Indian Take Away. Let the feast begin. At the moment, I’m having trouble remembering what we ordered. The feast itself wasn’t spectacular, but it was decent enough. I still prefer Mum’s Indian Chef for the moment. And even the little Indian Gourmet Curry Hut off Little Collins offers good value for the quality of curries.

But the special moment wasn’t about the feast itself, it was the film; Water (imdb, wikipedia, official). I was absolutely mesmerised. The cinematography was stunning. Put simply, I was awed by the shots, the angles, the colours, the vibrancy and the energy. The storyline itself is very touching – you always had hope for the characters. Thank you to Oendrila for explaining some of the concepts to provide a deeper understanding and most importantly an appreciation to the key concepts within the film. Clearly, the little girl stole the show, I really loved her. The only downside was the male lead couldn’t really express his feelings in the movie (through facial expressions and body language) and thus really didn’t convey the love he had for the female lead. If you ever get the chance; get some popcorn, a glass if wine, wipe your glasses and enjoy the film. I’ll be getting a copy of this sometime soon.

a quiet one

Nothing special happening on Friday. Hit the office, went home with Jacs. Bought all the required ingredients to make a chicken mushroom risotto, a dvd from blockbuster and popcorn. Quite a lazy night in. Perfect.

the market

Saturday was an intense affair. Got up, headed home and cleaned up as the Chau Clan was coming over. That’s 35+ people. Yep, that’s my family. And that’s only half it – my Dad’s side of the family! It was my Grandparents anniversary. We gathered, prayed and had a feast. I really didn’t eat anything, just sat down and tried to get my little cousins to rebel against their mothers on cooking rice. For those that know me, I hate rice. Rice, no way! But sticky rice is good. Rice with colour is good. Basmati rice is ok. Rice used in a risotto is ok. But long grain rice = not good. I always prefer noodles. Noodles rock. And that’s all type of noodles; rice noodles, egg noodles and wheat noodles. Then you have different types of rice noodles, like vermicelli, fine vermicelli, broad rice noodles, fat rice noodles, fat round rice noodles. I can go on and on and on about noodles.

Whilst the Chau Clan entertained themselves, I dressed up and headed out to Port Melbourne for a fine dining experience at Watefront. Diana organised a get together before she embarked another trip to somewhere in the world – it’s a bit like where’s Wally. There was Diana, Luyen, Sueanne, Jess, Jacs and myself. It was great to catch up with Diana as the last time I saw her was… 2003! We talked, ordered seafood and a wonderful bottle of white wine. But, I was starving. As you would expect, such a ‘classy’ seafood restaurant you pay for some ridiculous price for a small portion. That’s fine by me, I had convinced myself that I needed to go on a diet and hence this is all good. Still, the hunger pains were calling. I ignored the best I could. Jacs and I had to attend another dinner.

Yes that’s right, another dinner. The best thing about it was it was right next door!!! Couldn’t believe my luck. Our Canadian darling Courtney was celebrating her quarter-life crisis birthday at 3 Station Pier. There were many new faces and I’m having a hard time recalling them. But, I had to answer something else, my hunger pains. A charcoaled grilled lamb pizza came out and it was satisfying. It was awesome, it was pure bliss. The eggplant was thinly sliced, a generous bed of rocket salad leaves and chunky lamb pieces. Fantastic. It was also great to catch up with Katherine, Edina, Rita and Doogs. After many rounds of wine, shots, cocktails it was time to shake some booty!

Now here is where the title “the market” comes in. Our original destination, The Beach at Port Melbourne was closed. One of Courtney’s friends suggested going to a gay night club. An exchange of looks between Doogs, Lammo and me and it was confirmed. Big, wide smiles and we were ready to experience the gay scene in Melbourne.

Off we went to Commercial Road looking for “Heaven’s Door”. A pretty gay name if you ask me. And some pretty gay themed drinks. I did not deter three men with four hot looking chicks (and a whole bunch of Courtney’s friends). We marched on and went in with our heads held high. A round of beers to loosen us up. A visit to the bathroom. Now here is a story. There was a massive mirror that was behind the toilet. I have never seen myself urinating. And it’s bloody hard to keep aim whilst checking yourself out in the mirror. And the greatest thing was that now I know what I look like, downstairs, from a particular angle. I pity the poor souls who have seen it - it’s not really a sexy scene.

So another round of drinks and Lammo took the plunge to spend his last dollars on a “Fire Island Ice Tea”. It was potent. You can’t taste the alcohol and it was yum. Reminds me of “Evil Brew”.

Out of Heaven’s Door to enter “The Market”. Literally, it is “The meat Market”. This is eye candy for girls and boys who like to admire hot, chiselled male bodies. I now know my body aspires to have that gay, hot body. It was packed; it must be a popular night. Lining up like eager little puppies. Had a quick chat with the lady bouncer who thought we were from out of town – we should’ve replied we were from Darwin. We entered.

The music was pumping and all you see is – hot guys… topless. Now I can see what Bergio sees. It was like a rave, a laser light show, thumping beats, smoky atmosphere – it reminds me of my younger days at God’s Kitchen and MoS tours. To sum it up, I had a blast. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

But the question remains, will I return?

a blast from the past

Sunday was all about catching up a friend. Mary decided that she had to escape Adelaide for the weekend to Melbourne. I haven’t seen Mary in about 3-4 years. I took her to my favourite café on Level 35 at Hotel Sofitel. There we talked as if time didn’t exist.

After some 2-3 hours later, I headed home. And someone popped up on my msn, a man I last saw in 2001/2002. Jason had moved to Canberra working with one of the Government departments.

last weekend…

It wasn’t as exciting and jam packed as the one detailed above. But there were some pretty important events happening.

Once again, Friday, I headed to Emerald for another quiet night. A dvd, dinner and popcorn. Saturday was pretty much a lazy affair; cleaned up Jac’s place, walked Judy, got dressed and headed to the city.

AIESEC Monash hosted their annual RnR Night. This time it was a classy event. Boys in suits, girls in frocks. KimChi Grandma on Bourke Street was the place to be. A scrumptious Korean BBQ was simply mouth-watering. It’s certainly been a long time since I had a decent Korean meal. Congratulations to all the much deserved award recipients and to Oendrila and her team for organising such a great night out.

Headed out to the Trader Bar. It’s a bit of a novelty. Drink prices are governed by market conditions and the rules of supply and demand. It was a great night, catching up with many people and getting all the Goss.

But Jacs and my night didn’t end there. It ended at the Police Station! I have always remembered Vivi’s official statement on witnessing a crime a year ago and psyched myself up to give my statement. What had happened, as we were driving to the airport, a car overtook as and clipped (side swiped) us as s/he re-entered into our lane. It was fairly deliberate and the driver simply didn’t care about the potential accident that could have happened. The driver almost took out another car in front of us. So we went to the Police Station and found out that the number plates were stolen!

Two close friends decided to take another step in their faith and was baptised at their church. For myself, it was quite a fascinating experience to attend another service other than my own (I’m a Roman Catholic and the service I attended to provide my support was a Baptist church). It really was an eye-opener experience and got me to reflect on my own faith and how important it was to me. Really the night was for Jing and Mayling; congratulations on embarking a journey of strengthening your faith. What’s more, it was great to catch up with them, as well as my date Wendy, MJ, Doogs, Leanne and meeting many new faces.

So that’s two weekends in one post. I’m finally done!

To round up...

It’s good to know that other than myself I have another person reading what I type up. Which, I still believe, is utterly crap.

When I ONLY had three posts…

Here is how the MSN chat went:
Mazzy: i LOVE your blog
Mazzy: i am reading all the time now
Huy: what all 3 posts? ha!

when you work for SBS...

reading a recent opinion article on TheWorldGame by Tim Vickery, who is the South American correspondent for The Wolrd Game / SBS Sport / BBC Sport - pretty much your all round freelance writer.

It started off like this...

"I run a ludicrously tin pot operation. I've had the same mobile phone for seven years - so old that it can't even send text messages. My computer was second hand when I bought it at the start of 2000. Broadband, media player - forget about it. It's nothing more than a glorified word processor."

hehehe, you can read the full article here:

a few weekends ago and somehow i still remember…

perhaps too much beer?

Never I say! The weekend started nice and easy with dinner at Nostro Baretto and their ever changing menu – which is part of the parcel. I have always enjoyed dining here and fondly remember when Mishie and I ordered the carbonara inspired dish. They had it again last week, but I went and ordered a sausage dish which was pure bliss – even though a little bit on the fatty side. So plenty of wine and amazing food – this could be heaven.

Will (Gary) came back to Melbourne, for albeit two weeks, and has now headed off to Japan to teach English within the Government. Clearly he is in the right town, with one of the highest rates of consumption of beer and alcohol in Japan. He will surely feel at home. And it was good to be back at the Portland / James Squire Brewhouse.

So Friday night was a nice lovely affair and seeing a friend off. The day was also fantastic as the office provided a gourmet lunch, with plenty of wine and beer to go around. AND the rare occasion of a casual day, the second time this year.

disgruntled fans

It was cold, raining and windy. Simon and I are season ticket holders of Melbourne Victory Football Club. Yes, we are Football (soccer) fans. Last season we went to most of the home games. It was disappointing season with Melbourne clearly dominating possession but never able to find the back of the net. Well except for the Victory goalkeeper who kept getting the ball out from his own net. In the off season, Victory offloaded half-a-dozen or so players and went on a recruiting frenzy. We now have three Brazilian imports, some local signings and pinching players from other clubs in the A-League.

Thus it seems that Victory is on the right road to success. Alas it was not to be. In the pre-season game against Central Coast Mariners it was the same story. With Victory going all out to attack and score goals and only managing to score a single goal and conceding three. Although I good point to make is that one of the Brazilian imports, Alessandro, was divine to watch on the pitch. Clearly he will be the one to watch. But being a left-back and not defending is another matter.

I recall reading an article where a season ticket holder for Middlesbrough ripped his ticket in front of Steve McClaren after a match in the English Premier League. I would love to do that in front of Ernie Merrick. Victory is in for a tough season.

After the game Simon took me to Wild Oscars. A nice little pub/bar we were dissected every aspect of the game and convinced ourselves that we should ask for a refund for our tickets. One too many beers after we headed to Darren’s 21st (art, management).

Yes you might wonder why a 25 year old individual attending a 21st birthday dinner. But, think about one of the poor soul who is 28 attending this dinner. It was a lovely affair and catching up with many people. Headed to Bar None afterwards.

Bar None. I am really impressed of this hidden venue in Camberwell. A silver service bar. A CHUUUCH!!! Clientele, and the array of drinks is mind-boggling. I will return.

Lammo and I decided to drop by to Makka's place. There people were playing Mafia, which was dissapointing to see as we had hyped ourselves up for a few drinking games and the like. Ah well, next time.

BBQ fever

Simon and Mishie are world class BBQ hosts. I felt charitable and offered Pei-San a lift who lives in the wannabe Toorak of Melbourne. Lots of meat, great company, shisha and plenty of wine is the best combination for a fantastic BBQ. It was soooo good to see and catch up with faces I havent seen for sometime. The likes of Flo, Luke B, Andrew Connolly, Nick S and the usual gang of Alfy and my skinny pal Luke R.

Being the charitable person that I am drove Pei-San to wannabe Toorak, then took the liberty to drop by to Darren's place for a game of poker. I didnt want to win, but I do remember having nice little chip towers and taking quite a few people out. And lost in the final hand where Amy wiped me clean.

ausl mc 00-01 on BBC

I got an interesting email from little Chau that was sent to Jen and myself. I then quickly sent it to his former boss, Tez. We all think it is somewhat hilarious, well at least amusing.
